J-Michael Roberts is a digital forensic examiner and expert witness residing in Brooklyn, New York. He has over a decade of experience in the cyber-security field, primarily focused in digital forensics and cyber incident response (DFIR) in the private sector, assisting organizations through large and complex data breach incidents.
He has testified as an expert witness in U.S. District Court, provided expert testimony in ICDR arbitration, and provided expert statements to courts for civil litigation.
Prior to forming Corvus Forensics, he was a Vice President in Stroz Friedberg’s New York office, where he directly supervised staff assigned to the Incident Response practice and managed the firm’s New York digital forensics lab while maintaining an active caseload.
He has led response teams in a number of significant matters, including the investigation of data breaches within large financial networks, state-sponsored intrusions, and performed analysis pursuant to FTC inquiries about the nature of data management on mobile and internet-based consumer platforms.
He has participated in formal training with the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners (ISFCE) where he earned and maintains status as a Certified Computer Examiner (CCE). He has also participated in formal training with SANS Institute, where he earned and maintains a GIAC Reverse Engineering Malware (GREM) certification.
In his spare time he developed and continues to maintain the VirusShare project, a searchable malware database that collects, indexes and safely provides samples of malware to the cyber-security community to assist with research and investigations.
